This installation, Reception, was created by a woman who's only a few years older than me, Vadis Turner. The piece was almost too overwhelming to look at for long--I wanted to really get in there and look at it from all sides and examine all the materials, but of course, its flimsiness and fragility seem to be deliberate, to ward off inspection. Look-but-don't-touch, just like wommyn, eh? ;)
But nothing prepared me for The Dinner Party. I walked in and thought, "Oh dear, everyone's here," and choked up and tried not to cry. I love how the walls are reflective, so that you, too, can imagine yourself a guest at the feast. I spent a long time there.
During January in New York, I revisited old familiar places and charted the new. I went to the Financial District, Jackson Diner, the Brooklyn Public Library, Coney Island, Ground Zero, the Brooklyn Museum, and probably the single most awesomely pretentious bar in Williamsburg. Pictures are here :) --MCB
